The MotoGP Team Shakeup: Steiner's Tech3 and the Battle for Power (2026)

The MotoGP world is abuzz with speculation as the 2027 silly season unfolds, and the focus has shifted from riders to teams. The key question on everyone's mind is: what machinery will the Tech3 team, led by the enigmatic Guenther Steiner, be using in the new rules era? This decision could have significant knock-on effects, impacting not just Tech3 but the entire MotoGP landscape.

Tech3, a long-time satellite Yamaha partner until 2019, has since become a crucial part of KTM's growth strategy in the premier class. The team operates as an extension of KTM's factory operation, with almost identical liveries and resources. Enea Bastianini and Maverick Vinales currently enjoy similar support to KTM's factory riders, Brad Binder and Pedro Acosta.

However, KTM's financial struggles and Honda's aggressive expansion plans have created a tense situation. Honda, aiming to regain its dominant position, is reportedly targeting both Tech3 and Gresini Racing. Gresini has already rejected Honda's advances, opting for a counter-offer from Ducati, despite the potential loss of Fermin Aldeguer to VR46. This leaves Tech3 as Honda's primary focus.

Honda's interest in Tech3 is multi-faceted. Firstly, they want to expand their data collection in the new 850cc era. Secondly, they value the services of development rider Luca Marini, who is set to be squeezed out of the factory team by the arrival of Fabio Quartararo and David Alonso. Bringing Tech3 into the fold would provide a solution to both these issues.

From Tech3's perspective, a deal with Honda could fast-track the team to MotoGP success, something they've struggled to achieve under KTM's leadership. Despite winning two races with Miguel Oliveira in 2020, Tech3 has only achieved six podiums since, with most of those coming from Pedro Acosta before his promotion to the factory team.

Honda's RC213V has also faced performance challenges, but it has secured satellite wins through LCR's Johann Zarco and Alex Rins. The RC213V's development has clearly surpassed KTM's RC16, and the promise of the RC214V in 2027 is particularly enticing.

However, according to paddock sources, KTM has successfully negotiated a deal to keep Tech3 on board, ensuring four bikes on the grid next year. KTM's new Indian ownership has helped them emerge from financial difficulties, and they recognize the benefits of having more bikes in the new era. Guenther Steiner's influence played a crucial role in these negotiations, as he negotiated directly with KTM's top brass, bypassing KTM motorsport boss Pit Beirer.

Steiner's frustration with KTM's motorsport department during the initial Tech3 takeover led to a more favorable financial agreement with KTM, appealing to his venture capital backers. This deal could exclude Marini from joining Tech3, with Yamaha reportedly keen to secure his services at Pramac. It also provides a potential lifeline for KTM stalwart Brad Binder, allowing KTM to retain his services while accommodating Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio at the factory level.

For Vinales, who is injured and in contention for a factory spot, this development means more time to recover. Tech3's continued association with KTM ensures a more stable environment for him to regain his fitness before deciding his future.
