Attention passengers! A significant disruption is on the horizon as London Liverpool Street Station is scheduled to shut its doors for five consecutive days in March to facilitate crucial maintenance work. This situation has been announced by Network Rail, which operates the railway infrastructure.
The affected weekends will include March 15, March 21, March 22, March 28, and March 29. During these periods, all Greater Anglia services arriving in London will be impacted, and travelers should brace for delays in their journeys.
Why is this closure necessary? The answer lies in essential engineering tasks designed to ensure that the rail systems remain safe and reliable for all commuters. These tasks include significant improvements in roof drainage at Liverpool Street Station, along with track and rail upgrades near Ilford Station. Additionally, inspections of walls, tunnels, and brickwork will take place, alongside routine track maintenance and overall infrastructure upkeep.
Katie Frost, the route director for Anglia at Network Rail, expressed her apologies for the inconvenience this may cause to weekend travelers. "There’s never an ideal time to implement railway closures," she stated, "but our planned work aims to achieve extensive renewals, repairs, maintenance, and surveys on these heavily utilized routes leading into London Liverpool Street. Most of this work must be conducted when trains are not in operation to ensure the safety of our staff, and we’re making every effort to maximize the time available to accomplish as much as possible."
It's also important to note that the Elizabeth Line will experience closures between Stratford and Shenfield during the same weekends in March. Furthermore, London Overground services from Enfield Town, Cheshunt, and Chingford to London Liverpool Street will also be affected.
