Big news for Tennessee Volunteers fans! The Tennessee football team just secured a commitment from Penn State safety transfer Dejuan Lane, following his weekend visit to Knoxville. This announcement, confirmed by CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, marks a significant addition to the Vols' roster.
Lane, who spent his first two college years at Penn State, is familiar with Tennessee's defensive setup, as he's reuniting with defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and safeties coach Anthony Poindexter.
Lane's performance at Penn State last year was noteworthy. He played in 12 games, starting 3, and amassed 290 snaps. His Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade stood at 71.0. To put this in perspective, Tennessee's Edrees Farooq earned a 69.1 grade, while Kaleb Beasley scored a 61.0, and Andre Turrentine a 59.3.
During his sophomore season, the 6-foot-2, 212-pound safety recorded 29 tackles and 1 sack. In coverage, opponents targeted him 13 times, resulting in 11 catches for 139 yards and 1 touchdown.
Lane's recruiting profile is interesting. He was a four-star recruit in the 2024 class. However, in the transfer portal, 247sports doesn't rank him, while On3 considers him a three-star transfer, ranking him as the No. 138 player in the portal. This difference in rankings is something to watch, as it could indicate varying levels of potential and impact.
The addition of Lane addresses a crucial need for Tennessee. The team lost Andre Turrentine, the only safety who played significant snaps last season. However, Tennessee's safety play last season was a concern, making the addition of Lane even more critical.
It remains to be seen if Tennessee will continue pursuing more transfer safeties, with Georgia transfer Joenel Aguero also linked to the team.
Lane is the fourth Penn State player to commit to Tennessee via the transfer portal this cycle, joining defensive tackle Xavier Gilliam, linebacker Amare Campbell, and edge rusher Chaz Coleman.
Including Lane, Tennessee has now secured 9 players through the transfer portal. This group includes Xavier Gilliam, Amare Campbell, Chaz Coleman, Kansas State nickel back Qua Moss, LUS offensive tackle Ory Williams, Auburn cornerback Kayin Lee, Louisville kicker Cooper Ranvier, and Eastern Kentucky linebacker/long snapper Blake Howard. The Vols are clearly being active in bolstering their roster through the transfer portal.
