BART's board has unveiled a series of drastic measures to balance the budget, should additional funding not be secured. These measures include closing stations, reducing train services, and even conducting layoffs. But here's where it gets controversial: the plan suggests a three-phase approach, with each phase potentially impacting commuters more than the last.
Phase 1: In January 2027, BART might close the 10 stations with the lowest ridership. A necessary step, some argue, but a concerning one for those who rely on these stations.
Phase 2: By July 2027, the situation could escalate. Up to 15 stations could be shut down, and commuters might face a 50% fare increase. A significant blow to both accessibility and affordability.
Phase 3: The most extreme scenario—train service could cease entirely. This would leave thousands of commuters stranded and searching for alternative transportation.
"These are worst-case scenarios, but we must be prepared," said Victor Flores, BART Board Director. The agency's deficit has been growing since the COVID-19 pandemic, as remote work trends have significantly reduced ridership.
Laura Tolkoff, a transportation policy director, emphasizes the gravity of the situation, stating that these scenarios are not exaggerated.
The Connect Bay Area ballot measure proposes a sales tax increase to fund BART and other transit agencies. However, if these service cuts are implemented, BART's progress could be set back by half a century.
